Experience the beauty of The Legacy Trail as you ride in the comfort of the surrey: a four-passenger, four-wheeled canopy-covered bicycle.

The surrey is ideally suited for mobility-challenged individuals, provided they can climb one step onto the surrey.  Friends of The Legacy Trail and Sarasota County volunteers do the pedaling while you relax and enjoy the sights during a free 45-minute ride alongside other cyclists, joggers, and walkers on the trail.

What:

• Sarasota County Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources, in partnership with Friends of The Legacy Trail, presents the Surrey Program, which offers a way for mobility-challenged residents and visitors to share in the Legacy Trail experience.
• Four-wheeled, surrey-type bicycle with a canopy cover; volunteers provide the pedal power.
• Maximum four-person capacity per ride.
• Sorry, no pets are allowed on the surrey. Service dogs welcome.
• The ride is free.
• Reservations are required.
• No smoking.

Where & When

Leaves from Laurel Park in front of the Sandra Sims Terry Community Center, 509 Collins Road, Nokomis.

• In 2026, the surrey program will run from January 13 until April 29.
• The surrey rides operate on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, three times a day, with departure times at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m..
• Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time.
• Please check in inside the lobby of the community center.

• Advance registration is required.
  Request your dates to ride here.
• Surrey rides may be cancelled due to rain or extreme cold.
  In the event of rain or extreme cold, rides may be canceled and you’ll be notified ahead of time.
• How much does it cost?
  It’s free! There is no cost to ride the surrey. Tax deductible donations may be made here or mailed to  Friends of The Legacy Trail, P.O. Box 792, Osprey, FL 34229.
• How many passengers can ride?
  The surrey can accommodate up to four passengers per trip. There is a 600-pound weight limit per trip. If you are unsure how this may affect your trip, please inquire when making your reservation.
